Big Cedar’s Big Milkshakes

There is a new line of five crazy milkshakes on the menu at Uncle Buck’s Fish Bowl & Grill at Big Cedar’s Fun Mountain, and they look dangerously indulgent. These things are fully loaded with toppings—including items that could be a dessert in and of themselves. For example, the birthday cake shake has a colorful sprinkle rim, whipped cream, vanilla frosting and—wait for it—and entire confetti cupcake. The Candy Craze shake looks like something from Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory, with candy popping out at all angles in fun colors and shapes: rock candy sticks, licorice, a huge rainbow swirl lollipop, cotton candy and a rim made from pastel Sixlets.

Downing Street Pour House Opens

After much anticipation, Hollister-based Downing Street Pour House opened the doors to its second location this weekend (1724 E. Battlefield, Springfield). The spot has a casual pub atmosphere with elevated takes on pub food that include loaded Wagyu burgers (the one topped with Hatch green chilies caught our eye), indulgent poutine, giant hot pretzels, award-winning chicken wings and a steak frites meal made with Wagyu beef. The restaurant has long been a popular Hollister spot and is owned by the same crew that’s behind the championship barbecue at Gettin’ Basted. Who’s ready to dig in?

Shopping at Simply Delicious

If you’ve been lucky enough to attend an event catered by Simply Delicious (or if you ever grabbed lunch at Fork & Spoon), then you know owner Patty Wingo’s creations are notoriously delish. (Full disclosure: I have a bit of a bias; she catered my wedding.) Now, the catering company is opening a new venture, Simply Delicious Market, where you can swing by to grab from a weekly rotating menu of pre-made meals to-go (big enough to serve four), salads, desserts, condiments like salsa or salad dressing, and more. You can walk-in or pre-order your food, but pre-ordering is preferred. The new shop opens September 7.

Smoothie Newsie

This week we have two little tidbits of smoothie-related news.

First, Culture Counter has begun serving smoothies at their little Pickwick shop, and they look delicious. We’re craving a taste of the Golden Guerilla, a banana-based smoothie with coconut milk, turmeric, ginger, cinnamon and date syrup. Sounds like the creamy, spicy, sweet combo of my dreams—something to start the day when you’re feeling a little meh.

Second, there’s a sweet little smoothie bowl truck open at Farmers Market of the Ozarks that we’re dying to try. Abby’s Acai Company’s cute orange truck is slinging overnight oats and organic acai bowls with so many lovely toppings: a sprinkle of chia seeds here, a dash of blueberries there, flaky little coconuts on top for some texture. Oh yeah; we’re here for it.
